Can a brit learn to drive in ameriica?

hi... I am "living" in America at the moment, whilst coming and going on several different visas. I am presently here as a tourist for 90 days, and will be coming back for a year. During that year, I want to be able to drive here, and so am thinking about learning to drive and get a car now. I am not sure if I qualify for a US ID, although I do have a social security number. Is there a special way to do it, or do I go to the clroom lessons with the teenagers? thanks for your help
