Arabs consider their conquests colonization of regions including Europe as golden era?

Arabs have been angry with the West for its colonial past in the Middle East having lasted only a few decades, but in the meantime they consider their own conquests and colonization of vast regions of the world, including Europe, as their "golden era". How can you explain the paradox of this?
