Do Progressives and Liberals believe that the Government should chose what's best for an individual?

Conservatives seem to believe that the will of the 'majority" should supersede what is right under the law. Wouldn't that be the 'collective community' you speak of? I believe that Liberals understand that the Government exists to protect the people, in exchange you allow the Government a certain amount of access to your life, that's the social compact. If however the Government abuses that trust you get to vote them out, that's democracy in action
