What is the best way to tell if the transaxle is going in a 1991 Ford probe and the strut are gone or going?

Well here we go, Probe is the only car we see smoking in the parking lot than minivans. What sound does it make? If it's a CV axel; it would make a clicking noise, strut; a t noise. Bearing; never mind if you have a 1991 Probe all need to be replaced.
