What was used to oxidize silver to give it the dark black contrast?

I see it used in traditional hopi silver, polished silver with the flat black finish in the recess what is used to cause such a dark contrast? i am looking into trying my hand as a silversmith, so any other tips are welcomed as well. Thank You
